Haglund's Deformity

Haglund’s deformity is a bony enlargement that forms on the back of the heel, near where the Achilles tendon attaches to the heel bone. This condition often leads to irritation, pain, and swelling in the area, especially when wearing shoes that have rigid backs, such as high heels or stiff footwear. The constant rubbing and pressure can also cause inflammation of the surrounding soft tissues, including the Achilles tendon and the bursa (a small fluid-filled sac), leading to conditions like bursitis. Common symptoms include a noticeable bump on the back of the heel, redness, and pain that worsens with activity. Left untreated, Haglund’s deformity can cause chronic discomfort and may interfere with everyday activities. Treatment often begins with conservative measures such as modifying footwear, using heel pads, or anti-inflammatory medications, but surgery may be necessary in more severe cases.
